Diving into Archive: Evidence of Shipwrecks in the Sea of Crete, 1400-1600 A.D
The Early Modern Shipwrecks project presents data on shipwrecks based on written evidence contemporary with the wrecks in question. I am delighted on the opportunity to present to members of the IMS several case studies of ships and galleys dated to the fifteenth- and sixteenth centuries that sank in tragic circumstances around the Island of Crete. The reconstruction of the events will be followed by an open discussion in the historical and archaeological significance of the findings. In this respect, this forum constitutes a unique opportunity to discuss the methodological challenge of matching these finds and archaeological data.
* This presentation precedes my talk at the MSA Conference (Friday, 31 May, afternoon), where I will present shipwrecks data analysis on a larger scale.
