Paris-Athens 1919-1939: The Double Voyage / Paris-Athènes 1919-1939 : le double voyage.

The goal of the project is the systematic and thorough study of the cultural influences, the social relations and the reciprocal exchange of ideas between Greece and France, from 1919 to 1939.

Since 2008 the Institute of Mediterranean Studies (IMS-ITE) has collaborated with the Benaki Museum and the École Française d'Athènes for the research project Παρίσι-Αθήνα1919-1939: Το διπλό ταξίδι / Paris-Athènes 1919-1939: le double voyage.

During and after World War I, Greece and France had built a mutual policy of political friendship and cultural cooperation which was further strengthened throughout the interwar period. Many Greek artists, writers and other intellectuals were drawn to Paris, the uncontestable cultural centre of Europe in those years, and this continuous exchange produced significant results.

The goal of the project is the systematic and thorough study of the cultural influences, the social relations and the reciprocal exchange of ideas between Greece and France, from 1919 to 1939.

The project is being co-ordinated by a Scientific Committee; Its members are Lucile Arnoux-Farnoux (Université François-Rabelais Tours), Sophie Basch (Institut Universitaire de France, Université de Poitiers), Polyna Kosmadaki (Benaki Museum), François Loyer (C.N.R.S), Evgenios D. Matthiopoulos (University of Crete, IMS-ITE), Paul-Louis Rinuy (Université Paris 8), Panayotis Tournikiotis (National Technical University of Athens) and Maria Tsoutsoura (Ionian University).

The Committee convenes twice a year, once in Paris and once in Athens and also holds a number of meetings, at which collaborators and invited speakers present their work.

The project will be completed in 2012 with a Conference to be held in the Benaki Museum, Athens, which will be followed by the publication of its Proccedings.
