On Wednesday, October 9, , at 20.30 , the Institute of Mediterranean Studies (Melissinou and Nikiforou Fokas 130) will host a lecture by Ms. Maria Maniadakis entitled “The Network NATURA 2000 in Greece: from theory to practice ". Ms. Maniadakis is a Lawyer at the Supreme Court and has been practicing law in Chania since 2004. She studied Law at the University of Athens and received a Masters Degree in European Law from the University of Hanover, Germany. From 2003 to 2011 he was an associate at TEI. Crete, Chania Branch, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, teaching environmental law courses. Since 2016 she is the Coordinator of the LIFE NATURA THEMIS Program for the Chania Bar Association and has conducted a variety of studies on environmental offenses. Since 2018 he has been a regular member of the Chania Forest Charter Appeal Commission. Since 2019 she is a researcher at the national research program HELLASNOMOSAT with her research interests currently focusing on new surveillance technologies as instruments for the implementation of environmental law. He has participated in numerous conferences in Greece and abroad on European, environmental and general legal issues. He speaks English, German and Russian.

The purpose of Ms. Maniadaki's presentation is to review the legislative framework for the NATURA 2000 network and its implementation in Greece. Specific reference will be made to the conditions for the approval of projects in areas of the NATURA 2000 network. Among others, the recent WEU decision C-504/2014 on the lack of protection of Caretta Caretta within the Kyparissia area will be presented. Finally, there will be a brief report on the results of the LIFE NATURA THEMIS Program on the implementation of environmental legislation in the areas of the NATURA 2000 network in Crete.
