Joly, Fábio, and José Ernesto Moura Knust. “Limits and Possibilities of a Model for the Study of Slavery in the Ancient Mediterranean”. Esboços: Histories in Global Contexts, vol. 31, no. 58, Feb. 2025, pp. 519-38.

The aim of this article is to respond to the comments that our colleagues generously made to the text entitled “Ancient Slavery from a Mediterranean Perspective: A Proposal for a Global Approach”. This response is organized around four themes on which we believe that many of the considerations made by our colleagues converge: 1) the validity of theoretical reflections and the construction of wide-ranging historical models; 2) the relationship between global models and the agency of historical subjects and their life trajectories; 3) our relationship with Moses Finley's work, particularly his concept of “slave society”; 4) chronological divisions and the question of the temporalities of ancient Mediterranean slavery.
