The Laboratory of Satellite Remote Sensing and Archaeo-environment of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies - Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (IMS-FORTH), announces a phd scholarship for candidates that want to participate in the implementation of the project « DynByzCrete- Recapturing the Dynamics of the Early Byzantine Settlements in Crete: Old problems - New Interpretations through an Interdisciplinary Approach». The project is carried out under the framework of the Operational Programme «EDUCATION AND LIFELONG LEARNING» (NSRF 2007-2013) and specifically the action «ARISTEIA ΙΙ».

Research objectives

The research includes collection of archaeological data regarding the towns and settlemets of Early Byzantine Crete and especially their fortifications, creation of a digital database, contributing to the compilation of thematic maps, participation in field work in Crete, active participation in publishing the results of the research in international journals and conferences. Candidates need to have a strong stimulus and be able to collaborate and interact constructively within an international team with various disciplines.

 

Necessary Requirements:

1. Graduation Degree (BA) in Archaeology.

2. First Class M.A. in Byzantine Archaeology.

3. Admission by Greek or foreign university for a PhD thesis on a topic relevant to Byzantine fortifications.

4. Participation in research and archaeological fieldwork in Crete and knowledge of GIS.

5. Good knowledge of English.

Location: Rethymno, Crete, Greece

Contract duration: The duration of the post is 5 months. We should emphasize that the goal of the Laboratory of Satellite Remote Sensing and Archaeo-environment, IMS-FORTH is to invest in long-term collaborations with promising scientists and scholars that will participate in future funded projects. The successful candidate is expected to start by May 1st, 2014 the latest.

4.       Please note that the call for proposals for a contract for the lease of this project is not competitive, while any option counterparty has the character of acceptance of a proposal rather than "hiring".

In case the original documents do not match the copies that have been submitted with the application, the applicant is dismissed from the application procedure.
