Scholarly supervision - coordination of the translation
of the Judicial Registers
of the Turkish Archive of Herakleio
(2000- )
Scholarly supervision - coordination: Prof. Elizabeth Zachariadou
The project is funded by the Municipality of Herakleio and carried
out by the Vikelaia Municipal Library.
The project aims at the translation of the Ottoman judicial registers
(seriye sicilleri), a source of special importance for the Cretan history,
preserved in the Turkish Archive of Herakleio (Ott. Kandiye), in continuation
of the work of the late Nikolaos Stavrinides. The programme is funded
by the Municipality of Herakleio and it carried out by the Vikelea Municipal
Library under the scholarly supervision and coordination of Elizabeth
Zachariadou on behalf of the Programme of Turkish Studies of the I.M.S. and
in collaboration with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences of Budapest.
The project has already resulted in a volume in Greek published in 2003 by Eleni
Karantzikou and Penelope Foteinou under the supervision of Elizabeth
Zachariadou, containing the abstracts of all 934 entries
of the judicial register no. 3 (dated 1669-1673 and 1750-1767). This
archival material constitutes an important source for the study of
the shaping of Cretan society, and especially of the city of Kandiye,
immediately after the Ottoman conquest. The publication of the abstracts
is accompanied by an introduction, a preliminary approach to their
historical content, glossary and indices. The project continues its
work with the translation of the registers no. 2, 4 and 5.
