The El Greco Centre
CALL FOR PAPERSThe Conference will take place in Crete, from Friday the 23rd until Sunday the 25th of September 2005.
The rather confusing state of attributions of a great variety of works to Domenicos Theotocopoulos and the existence of many early copies and modern forgeries, obliges us to re- examine the question of his studio and his followers during the late 16th and 17th centuries. El Greco´s technique and working practice and the role of his assistants demand a reconsideration. A major objective of the conference is a reappraisal of the contribution of the artist´s son Jorge Manuel, both as a collaborator of his father and as an independent artist. The question of attributions as a historical phenomenon, taking into account the changing image of the artist is also of interest in this context.
We are equally interested in case studies of copies and forgeries.

On Saturday 8th May 2004, during a “Study Day” devoted to the topic “El Greco: Toledo and beyond”, Nicos Hadjinicolaou gave a talk entitled “Nationalistic Borrowings of El Greco, in which he first referred to the wider problem of approaching artists who settled in foreign countries permanently during the last five centuries, and then gave an in-depth analysis of the extreme ideological attempts, in Greece and Spain, to prove in each case the pure ‘Byzantine´ or ‘Spanish´ character of his painting.
On Friday 7th May at the same venue, the Society of Cretans in Great Britain, in collaboration with the National Gallery, organised an evening devoted to El Greco and Crete, at the beginning of which Nicos Hadjinicolaou gave a talk entitled “An Artist from Crete in Italy and Spain.”
