Christos Hadziiossif is an honorary professor of Modern History at the University of Crete. From 2009 to 2016, he directed the Institute for Mediterranean Studies at the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas in Rethymno, Crete. His research focuses on economic and social history, historiography, and the history of technology. He is the general editor of the collective work "The History of Greece in the 20th Century" published by Vivliorama and directs the series "History and Society" published by the University of Crete Press. He is a member of the coordinating committee of the ARCHERS research program conducted at the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas and is responsible for the sub-project studying the social preconditions of technological innovation. His most recent publication is "European Integration, Germany, and the Resurgence of Nationalism" published by Vivliorama in Athens in 2017.
He was born in 1947 and graduated from the German School of Athens in 1965.
From 1973 to 1975, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Heidelberg (Alfred-Weber Institute). He taught as a visiting professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris and at the University of Vienna.
In 1981, he received his Ph.D. in History from the École Pratique des Hautes Études - Paris IV with a dissertation on "The Greek Community of Egypt (19th century)."
Since 1983, he has been working at the University of Crete, with research interests spanning the fields of economic and social history of the Mediterranean and Greek region (18th-19th century), Greek shipping and trade, the history of industry, and political and economic developments in Greece during the interwar, occupation, and post-war periods.
He has an extensive body of work with independent publications such as: "Η γηραιά Σελήνη. Η βιομηχανία στην ελληνική οικονομία, 1830-1940" (Athens: Themelio, 1993), "Συνασός: Ιστορία ενός τόπου χωρίς ιστορία" (Heraklion: University of Crete Press, 2005), "Ιστορία της Ελλάδας του 20ού αιώνα" (editorial supervision, Athens: Vivliorama, 1999, 2002, 2003), as well as numerous contributions to collective works such as "Η δημοκρατία της Βαϊμάρης και οι σημερινές 'αναβιώσεις' της" (Patakis Editions), "Μελέτες για τον Εμφύλιο Πόλεμο 1945-49" (Olkos Editions), "Ψηφίδες" (University of Crete Press), and more.
